Career Profile - Film Grip

Scott Martin

As the credits roll after a film, have you ever wondered what a ‘Grip’ is and what they actually do on a film set? Meet Scott Martin, Grip extraordinaire!

“As a Grip, my responsibility on the set is to shape and control light in order to help set the mood or tone of a scene,” said Martin. “I also assist in camera support and need to be a very fast problem-solver throughout the shooting schedule.”

Scott grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario and graduated from Confederation College in Film Production. “My role models growing up were my parents,” said Martin. “They encouraged me to pursue the things I enjoy and to try as many different and unique things as possible. I really didn’t have a specific career goal, or dream job, but I knew I wanted to do something creative and fast-paced. I wanted to work in a hands-on industry as well,” he added.

Working along-side the likes of award winning actor, Greg Kinnear, and Director of Photography, Dean Semler, makes Scott’s career that much more dynamic. “Working 12-14 hours a day and sometimes starting as early as 5:00 A.M. takes a little getting used to,” said Martin. “What I like most about my career is the fast paced environment, different locations and the great people I get to meet and work with.”

Scott believes the sky is the limit for young people exploring career options. “My advice for young people is to find out what makes you happy and discover everything about that industry you can. Get the right education and training and keep learning because there is always more.”
